The most useful colorant in pottery: ambers, browns, celadons, tenmokus, and warm red-brown clays and slips.
You must test before you use it, at any scale. Raw materials, mined or man-made, are not consistent. Color, strength, particle size and chemistry can change from one bag to the next and from one supplier to another, even when the name on the bag stays the same. Before you use this material in a glaze, slip or clay body of any size, mix a small test batch, fire it on your own clay in your own kiln, and check the results.
What it is
A fine red powder: iron oxide, the same compound as rust. It's the go-to colorant for warm colors. It gives honey and amber in a clear glaze, browns and blacks at higher amounts, and pale green celadons in a gas kiln fired in reduction (with less oxygen). It also warms and darkens clay bodies and slips.
Getting started
- In a clear glaze, about 1 to 3% (1 to 3 grams per 100 grams of dry glaze) gives honey to amber, 4 to 7% medium to dark brown, and 8 to 12% very dark brown to black.
- For celadon in a gas reduction kiln, start at 0.5 to 2%.
- In clay or slip, start around 2 to 5%.
- Results change a lot between electric and gas kilns. Fire a test tile in your own kiln.
For glaze formulators
- Red iron oxide, Fe₂O₃.
- A strong flux in reduction, where it converts to FeO, so high-iron glazes run more in gas kilns than in electric ones.
- High-iron glazes can bubble or blister as the iron gives up oxygen in firing.
- Name note: this material was sold as "Superfine" and is now sold as Micronox. It's the same material.
- The product photo is a general one; color tone varies from lot to lot.
Safety
- Low toxicity, but don't breathe the dust. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator (N95 or better) when handling it dry, and clean up with a wet sponge, not a broom.
- It stains skin, clothes and work surfaces.
