Weight Reduction
Semi-hollow shelves are approximately 25% lighter than conventional cordierite kiln shelves . For example, a 12 x 24 x 1″ solid shelf weighs 20.75 pounds while the same size hollow core shelf weighs only 12.3 pounds . This makes them much easier on your back when loading and unloading your kiln.
Increased Strength
Despite being lighter, hollow shelves are much stronger for their weight The I-beam structure between the hollow channels gives hollow core shelves extra strength making them warp and crack resistant .
Energy Efficiency
Since they have less material mass, they make your firings more energy efficient because less thermal mass means it takes less energy wasted on heating your kiln furniture . This can result in real cost savings over time, especially for studios that fire frequently.
Superior Flatness
The top and bottom of each shelf is ground to a perfect smooth, flat surface , and they're resistant to warping even at high temperatures.
Temperature Rating
Hollow core kiln shelves are rated for cone 10 temperature and suitable for both electric and gas kilns in oxidation or reduction atmospheres, though they're not recommended for raku or wood firing.
