Update: Substitution of Helmar Kaolin with Edgar Plastic Kaolin (EPK)

Due to an ongoing supply shortage, Helmar Kaolin is currently unavailable. To maintain consistent availability of our clay bodies, we have temporarily substituted Edgar Plastic Kaolin (EPK) in the following formulas:

What this means for you:

  • Performance: There will be no change in working properties—your clay will still wedge, shape, and throw the same as before.

  • Firing behavior: Cone 06–04 bisque and higher fire results remain unchanged.

  • Finished appearance: Your glazed or unglazed finished work will look the same.

  • Raw clay color: In its unfired state, the clay may appear slightly whiter than before.

  • Bisque color: Some clay bodies may show a very subtle pinkish tint after bisque firing due to EPK’s natural iron content. This is minor and does not affect glaze fit, color, or final fired results.

  • Consistency: We’ve tested this substitution extensively to ensure that all formulas perform identically to those with Helmar Kaolin.

This substitution is purely a minor material change; it does not indicate a reformulation of the clay or a change in its quality. Your clay will behave and fire as expected, and all glaze results remain consistent.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss specific clay bodies, please don’t hesitate to call us—we’re happy to walk you through the details and provide reassurance.
