A new school year means fresh ideas, new students, and a ceramics classroom ready for creativity. Before the first class walks through the door, take a few minutes to make sure your clay, tools, glazes, kiln, and studio safety equipment are ready to go.

Whether you're setting up a brand-new K–12 ceramics program or restocking an established classroom, this back-to-school checklist will help you get organized for a successful semester.

1. Stock Up on Clay & Studio Essentials

Many hand-building projects use somewhere in the range of one to three pounds of clay, and beginning wheel-throwing projects often use a little more once you account for practice attempts and trimming waste.

A few things worth building into the number:

  • Practice clay. First-time throwers will center, collapse, and re-wedge the same clay several times. Budget for it.
  • Reclaim. If you have a reclaim bin, a wedging table, or a pugmill, a meaningful percentage of scrap clay comes back into circulation and lowers your reorder volume.

  • Fire test tiles. A rack of test tiles on your own clay body, at your own cone, is the single best classroom reference you can make. Students choose colors from the fired result instead of the wet color in the jar.
  • Post the application rules. How many coats, how far up from the foot to stop, and whether wax resist goes on before or after glazing. Write it once, post it on the wall, and stop repeating it.
  • Keep brushes sorted by glaze. Cross-contaminated brushes are the quiet reason a reliable classroom glaze suddenly stops looking reliable.
  • Stir before every class. Brushing glazes settle. A quick stir or a pass with a glaze mixer keeps the suspension even and results consistent.

3. Inspect Your Kiln & Firing Supplies

What to Look for During a Kiln Inspection

Walking the kiln before the first load takes about twenty minutes and tells you whether you're firing on schedule in October or waiting on parts.

  • Elements. Look for sagging coils, elements pulled out of their grooves, broken sections, or heavy scaling. Elements wear gradually, so a kiln that has started firing slower or missing its target cone is usually telling you something.
  • Thermocouple. Check for corrosion, bending, and how far the tip protrudes into the chamber. A worn thermocouple can read low or high and quietly shift every firing you run.
  • Bricks and lid. Cracks in soft brick are normal with age; crumbling edges, loose mortar in the lid, and damaged corners are worth photographing now so you can track whether they're getting worse.
  • Shelves. Chip off old glaze drips, check for warping, and re-apply kiln wash to the top surfaces only. Never wash the underside—it flakes onto the work below.
  • Vent system. Confirm the kiln vent actually pulls, the ductwork is intact, and the exterior outlet isn't blocked. Run it every firing, not just the smelly ones.
  • Electrical. Check the cord, plug, and receptacle for heat damage or discoloration, and confirm the breaker is correctly rated. Anything questionable here goes to your facilities team, not to a repair you make yourself.
  • Clearances. Keep the manufacturer's required distance from walls, storage shelving, and anything combustible. Summer cleanouts have a way of relocating a cabinet closer to the kiln than it should be.

Start a Kiln Log on Day One

If your classroom doesn't already keep a firing log, this is the year to start one. Record the date, the type of firing, the program used, the cone pack result, and anything unusual you noticed.

A log turns vague problems into fixable ones. When elements start to age, when a shelf begins warping, or when one section of the kiln consistently fires cooler, the pattern shows up in the log long before it ruins a class set of projects. Why Clay Dust Deserves Its Own Classroom Rule

Dry clay dust is the main airborne hazard in a ceramics room. Clay bodies and many glaze materials contain crystalline silica, and once dust becomes airborne it stays suspended long enough for a whole class to breathe it.

The good news is that a few habits handle almost all of it:

  • Never dry sweep. A broom moves dust into the air more effectively than it moves it into a dustpan.
  • Wet clean instead. Wipe tables with a wet sponge and mop floors with clean water. Change the water often—a dirty bucket just redistributes the same clay.
  • Use a HEPA vacuum, not a shop vac. A standard shop vacuum exhausts fine dust straight back into the room.
  • Keep dry materials contained. Mix dry glaze materials with proper ventilation and an appropriate respirator, and do it when students aren't in the room.
  • Clean as you go. Scrape trimming waste into a reclaim bucket while it's still damp rather than letting it dry on the floor.
  • Watch what leaves the room. Aprons and towels shaken out in the hallway carry the same dust with them. Wash them, don't shake them.

6. Organize Storage, Ware Handling & Classroom Workflow

Once projects start moving, storage becomes the bottleneck in most ceramics classrooms. A room that has clay, glazes, and a working kiln can still fall behind if there's nowhere for greenware to sit safely between class periods.

Set up your shelving before the first project, not during it:

  • Label shelves by class period. Every section needs a dedicated home for work in progress. Mixed shelves mean broken pieces and missing projects.
  • Separate wet, leather-hard, bisque, and glazed work. Four distinct zones prevent the most common classroom accident: a finished piece put back on the wrong shelf and knocked off later.

Before you finalize your syllabus, map your firings against the semester:

  • Count backward from your deadlines. Winter break, semester end, and any art show or exhibition all need finished work, which means glaze firings scheduled well before the date.
