KILN CONTROLLERS
Here you can Kiln Controllers at Sheffield Pottery Ceramic Supply.
NEW!!!:
There are four main brands of controllers for electric and gas powered kilns:
- Dawson Kiln Sitter which utilizes pyrometric cones to monitor temperature. Mechanical shut off provides extra-safe operation especially with limit timer option installed. Often used as a safety backup with Orton or Bartlett Digital controller.
- Orton Digital Controller as found on Paragon Kilns (Sentry 2.0 etc.), Skutt and many others.
- Bartlett Zone Control as found on Olympic, L&L, ConeArt kilns and many others. Bartlett offers a 3 key controller and the robust V6-CF.
- Digitry controller: Designed for the complicated firings of glass artists.

Bartlett Instrument Company: V6CF Digital Kiln Controller Cone fire method
- Used for firing ceramics
- Easy
- Ensures correct heat-work for each cone number and firing rate
- As few as six key presses can have a firing programmed and started Vary-fire method
- Used for firing glass, jewelry, crystalline glazes, etc.
- More complicated profiles
- More freedomThe V6-CF is Bartlett Instrument Company's fifth generation kiln
controller. Each generation has improved the reliability, features and
ease-of-use to make Bartlett Instrument Company's kiln controllers the
most accepted on the market. With the V6-CF cone-fire method, you
select 1 of the 4 firing speeds and your cone number and you're firing
your ceramics with as few as 6 key presses! The vary-fire method gives
you the freedom to create up to six, 8-step user programs to fire your
ceramics, crystalline glazes, glass or jewelry. Other features include
delay start, preheat, alarm, cone adjustments, thermocouple
adjustments, °F or °C operation, 16 segment program, and skip step.
Advanced features of the V6-CF's include 3-zone control and KISS
(kiln interface software system) for remote programming and data
collection from a personal computer!

Cone and Thermocouple Offsets
Cone Offset
CnoS
– Cone Offset is used to raise or lower the final temperature that is
reached using the Cone Fire mode. The following apply to cone offsets:
- The final temperature is affected only for the cone number that you change and no other cone numbers.
- The cone offset will remain for that specific cone number until it is changed again.
- Typing 00 (before the desired offset temperature) will raise the final temperature and increase the amount of heat work.
- Typing 90 (before the desired offset temperature) will lower the final temperature and decrease the amount of heat work.
- The maximum number of degrees that can be raised or lowered is 50° F (28° C)
- Cone offsets do not affect the VARY-FIRE mode.
Thermocouple Offset*
TCoS
– Thermocouple (T/C) Offset is used to raise or lower the temperature
that is indicated by the controller. The following apply to T/C offsets:
- The final temperature is affected for all CONE FIRE and all VARY-FIRE programs.
- The thermocouple offset will remain for that T/C until it is changed again.
- Typing
00 (before the desired offset temperature) will raise the indicated
temperature but it will lower the actual temperature in the kiln and
LOWER the amount of heat work.
- Typing 90 (before the
desired offset temperature) will lower the indicated temperature but it
will increase the actual temperature in the kiln and INCREASE the
amount of heat work.
- The maximum number of degrees that can be raised or lowered is 50° F (28° C)
- T/C offset affects both CONE FIRE and VARY-FIRE modes.
* T/C OFFSET is available on the V6-CF controller using the SMT600 circuit board (first manufactured March 1999).

Fine Tuning Zone Control Features
| LAG |
- The LAG controls the evenness of the firing. As the LAG is decreased the firing time is increased.
|
| AutoLAG |
- When AutoLAG is "ON" then the LAG feature does not function until the
final segment of the firing. AutoLAG will decrease the firing time and
it can be used if evenness of the firing is only important in the final
segment. |
| PID |
- Settings for PID are from 0% to 150%. The PID controls how much the
middle section helps the bottom section when the bottom is lagging
behind. When the bottom section is lagging and comes on at full power
then the middle section fires at the current power setting to help out
the bottom. The default setting is for 85%. PID does not function with
2 zone control. |
| T/C Offsets |
- Thermocouple offsets are used to balance the heat work in the three
zones and even the firing from top to bottom. Changing the t/c offsets
usually has no effect on firing time. |
| Shut Off (SHtO) |
- When shutoff is turned off (the default setting) then the average of
the three zone temperatures must reach the set-point before the kiln
turns off. With shutoff turned "on" then when any one of the zone
temperatures reaches the set-point the kiln will transition to the next
segment or if at the end go to complete. Setting the shutoff on will
help prevent overfiring. |
NOTE:
For kilns with heating elements in the bottom slab a more even firing
is generally achieved by setting the Shutoff to "on" and setting the
PID to zero.
