THROWING CLASSES AT FUNKWARE POTTERY: Canaan, CT:
Funkware Pottery is nestled among serene pastures on the top of a hill in Canaan, Connecticut between routes 44 and 7. The well-equipped studio in beautiful natural surroundings provides an excellent creative working environment for Joey Jablonski and her students. The classes are primarily in the use of the electric pottery wheel as a tool in making pots. Joey's skill in throwing on the wheel comes from three years of apprenticeship at Greenleaf Pottery with John Macomber, an accomplished functional potter of some 30 years. Add to that an additional eleven years as a studio potter developing her own techniques including workshops with Gerry Williams, Karen Karnes, Jeff Oestrich, Winne Owens Hart, Hayne Bayless, Toshiko Takaezu and sculpture classes at both Lyme Academy of Fine Arts and UConn's School of Fine Arts. She has also taught the Advanced Wheel class for UConn's Continuing Education Program.
There are only 3 students in a class so there is alot of individual instruction. A beginner would find the first session to be an introduction to good throwing skills and an overview of the whole process with the outcome being some beautifully glazed bowls and mugs.
Subsequent sessions are structured around projects that are chosen by the student. Advanced students would find a skilled guide to take them to the next level. That could be to hone skills through a self-determined project or a suggested project designed to increase expertise and introduce new shapes. Classes are offered in 4 week sessions with 2 hours/week of instruction. Class periods run continually allowing current students to maintain a spot in class indefinitely. As students become advanced, there is the opportunity for instruction on how to start a studio of their own.

Mark Hewitt Kiln Opening W.M. Hewitt Pottery
424 Johnny Burke Road
Pittsboro, NC 27312
My 900 cu. ft. kiln is a modification of a 14th century
kiln from Northern Thailand, and is similar in firing principle
to the Southern groundhog kiln.
We fill and fire it three times a year, each firing holds
about 2000 pots, big and small. The kiln takes six days to load,
three and a half days to fire, and a week to cool.
Unloading is always a thrill! The
sales are fun, lively events, with plenty of pots for everyone. There
are about 2000 pots for sale at each Kiln Opening. We preview the pots
on the Friday afternoon before each Sale (4 -7 pm), giving everyone an
opportunity to admire the work. No sales are made, nor reservations
taken, during the Preview. We open the Sale at 9 am on the Saturday morning, and usually
have a happy, loyal and eager crowd first thing in the morning.
However, if you don't like a crowd, come a little later.
Contrary to very flattering rumors, we do not sell out – ever – so come
later that day, or on the Sunday, noon - 5 pm
